Hosting the Oscars can be a thankless job. Everyone's a critic, and even if you do a good job, you're not the one who walks away with a trophy at the end of the night.
But hey, at least you get $15,000.
According to this year's host, Jimmy Kimmel, $15K is the going rate for jokes, montages and musical numbers. Kimmel revealed his salary on Kevin & Bean on KROQ (via Indiewire), which the hosts seemed to think was low for the work involved in the gig.
Kimmel laughed, “You know why? I think it’s illegal to pay nothing.”
Is it the same sum other hosts like Chris Rock and Billy Crystal have received? “That’s what they told me," Kimmel said.
“I’m not sure I was supposed to reveal this,” he added. "But nobody told me not to. I consider this their fault… I wonder if you get a raise if you do it more than once, like ‘we’re going to give you a three percent raise.’”
Kimmel usually has other plans for Oscar night besides hosting. The star typically hosts a special post-Oscars episode of his late night show, Jimmy Kimmel Live. Is that tradition dying this year?
“We’ll figure something out,” he said. “There will be something.”
