    Ivy makes it again

Ruling Bangladesh Awami League candidate Selina Hayat Ivy has swept to the Narayanganj mayoral elections defeating opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party candidate Sakhawat Hossain Khan with a margin of 79,567 votes.

According to the returning officer, Ivy polled a total of 1,75,611 votes while her nearest rival BNP’s Sakhawat managed to bag 96,044.
Returning officer Nuruzzaman Talukder announced the centre-based election result at his makeshift office at the Narayanganj club as results were coming from different polling centres Thursday night.
He, however, said he will officially announce the election result tomorrow morning.
Earlier in the day, Thursday, the polling was held uninterruptedly from 8:00am to 4:00pm and no untoward incidents or allegations of irregularities were reported during the polling.
According to the returning officer, some 2,96,036 out of a total of 4,79,392 Narayanganj voters, who account for 61.8 per cent, exercised their franchise in the local government polls.
Talking to newsmen after the victory, buoyant Ivy dedicated the victory to the country’s founding father Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and to the martyrs and the freedom fighters of Bangladesh’s liberation war.
She expressed her gratitude to the people of Narayanganj for re-electing her as the guardian of the commercial city for the second consecutive term.
Sakhawat Hossain Khan, however, smelled a rat in the victory of the ruling party candidate.
He alleged that the election result might have been finely-tuned engineered during the counting of votes.
BNP senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi Ahmed was, however, saying throughout the day that the polling was “apparently fair”.
At a post-poll briefing, the chief election commissioner, Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad, said the Narayanganj mayoral elections were held in a free and fair manner for the cooperation from voters and candidatesIvy
