The actor was known for his portrayal of the kind-hearted Father John Mulcahy on the long-running TV comedy drama.
William Christopher, who starred as Father Mulcahy in the long-running TV series M*A*S*H, has died at 84.
His son, John Christopher, revealed on Sunday that his father had died the previous morning – 18 months after he was diagnosed with cancer.
The actor was reportedly feeling well until two weeks ago.
“William Christopher was at home in Pasadena, California with his wife when he passed peacefully and without pain,” John told KABC-TV.
Christopher was born in Evanston, Illinois, in 1932 and made his debut as a stage actor in the 1950s before moving to television.
His most famous role was in M*A*S*H, playing the soft-spoken spiritual leader of the 4077th Mobile Army Surgical Hospital.
The hit 1970s comedy drama centred around the relationships between army surgeons and staffers during the Korean War.
Christopher was recently seen on the NBC soap Days Of Our Lives in a recurring role in 2012, where he also played a man of faith.
Christopher’s other notable roles included films The Fortune Cookie, The Shakiest Gun In The West and With Six You Get Egg Roll.
He is survived by his wife of more than 50 years and two sons.
